Addressing an audience is not something that I would have thought possible as an incredibly shy teen who only took Drama GCSE as a twisted form of self punishment. Even my English teacher questioned my options: ‘are you absolutely sure about this, Lucy? You do have to stand up and act in front of people you know…

However, since reciting Kubla Khan dressed as an opium poppy and screaming at nothing in a Crucible witch trial scene, I didn’t get any better at acting.

Public speakingBut these days, I do enjoy public speaking, and as such I have spoken about mental health at a wide range of events – from corporate dinners to college awareness days as well as community events and media workshops.

Events and organisations I’ve spoken at to date include: York Literary Festival; Sunderland Book Festival; Wigtown Book Festival; Time to Change Storycamp; Time to Change Young Champions event; BIMM Music School London; Society of Authors Creativity and Wellbeing Event, Manchester; People Power event, Newcastle; XenZone’s commissioner’s event, Sutton Coldfield; DWP colleague wellbeing event, Newcastle; Hull BID; and many more…

“I would really recommend Lucy as a speaker for any mental health event. She has a warm, friendly personality, who speaks honestly about her own experiences, offering time for questions and interaction with the audience.” Alice Hewson, Regional CYP Coordinator, Time to Change

“Lucy’s frank approach in sharing her personal experiences resonated with many. She spoke about her journey into writing her book ‘A Series of Unfortunate Stereotypes’, perfectly delivering anecdotes with plenty of wit and humour which kept everyone entertained.” Kathryn Shillito, Executive Director, Hull Business Improvement District
